Zeta Theta History
Zeta Theta was officially installed as a chapter on November 11, 1972 by Jeanette Lang, National Vice President, College Chapters and Charlotte Ward, Province Vice President. This group of eighteen women had met the national organizational requirements by functioning as the Euterpe Society for about two years prior with Janet R. Robinson as sponsor. Ginger West, the first president, had spearheaded the chapter with the help of Mrs. Robinson who, along with Gwyn Spell and Ruth Ann Rich of the Music faculty, served as the first advisors of Zeta Theta chapter.
Three patronesses were initiated as chapter members of the chapter: Mrs. Frankie Hicks, Mrs. Alicia Stelpstra, and Mrs. Helen Walker. It was Mrs. Stelpstra who presented the chapter with a brass, seven-inch candelabra in memory of her daughter, Marianne S. Brooks, who had been a member of SAI.
The chapter has presented American Musicales over the years and, on occasion, presented musicales with the local Phi Mu Alpha chapter, Zeta Gamma. In 1973-1974, the chapter took part in the National Bold Note Project and has supported SAI Philanthropies, Inc. with music supplies as well as financially.
During the years, three of those who served as chapter president were named Province Leadership Awardees by Mrs. Robinson, who was serving as Province Officer at the time. The first was Cheryl Dubberly, president 1978-1979, and Dena Rowan, who served two terms, from 1983-1985. Dena was second runner-up for the National Leadership Award her second year, and Cheryl served as Tau C Province Officer in 1993-1994. In 1986, Tammy Jenkins was nominated as the Province Leader in recognition for her service for fulfilling all of the offices for one year as the only chapter member.
